World Audio Drama Day
Celebrating World Audio Drama Day
A Journey into Immersive Storytelling
Today marks World Audio Drama Day, and so we’re celebrating the power of storytelling through sound. It’s a day to honour the magic that happens when a compelling narrative meets exceptional audio craftsmanship, creating worlds that captivate listeners and transport them into the heart of the story.
We work closely with our clients and their authors to adapt books into fully immersive audio scripts that take a story from the page into a whole new world of sound.
Our Journey in Audio Drama Excellence
We’ve had the pleasure of working on a variety of audio drama projects that showcase our passion for storytelling. From the beloved classic Anne of Green Gables to the adaptation of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, these audio dramas have taken listeners on journeys through time, space, and imagination. Our commitment to delivering world class audio services has led us to be recognised as ARIA nominees for the past two years, with David Copperfield earning a nomination for ‘Best Drama’ in 2024 and Hilda & The Time Worm securing a nomination in the same category in 2023.
Crafting Immersive Worlds
Creating audio dramas isn’t just about recording dialogue, it’s about building entire worlds through sound. One of our Sound Engineers, Luke, recently shared insights into how we approach sound design for Audible’s productions with projects like Hilda & The Time Worm, explaining how sound design plays a pivotal role in bringing a narrative to life:
'Hilda' has lived as graphic novels, a Netflix series and books, so we were excited to work with Audible on adapting the books into an audiobook series. It was the perfect opportunity to utilise binaural sound to create a fully-immersive experience for the listener. The stories feature a vast array of characters and creatures, so there was so much opportunity for creative and fun sound design. Aside from the main narrator, everything else was given the binaural treatment. This offered huge scope for creative ideas, and the movement within the 3D space really helped bring the stories to life. The binaural work was done using a number of spatialisation plugins. For the larger scenes with a lot of action, this really helped to convey a sense of scale, and I found the ability to control height particularly useful in fully utilising the 3D space.
Hilda
Hilda immersed listeners in the magical world of Trolberg in a project spanning script adaptation, casting 22 actors for 93 characters, with 3D sound design.
Embracing the Future with Dolby Atmos
In today’s ever evolving audio landscape, the possibilities for creating immersive sounds continue to emerge. One of the ways we do this is through our use of Dolby Atmos, which enables us to craft multidimensional sound experiences, allowing listeners to hear every sound with remarkable clarity.
The Magic of Audio Drama
World Audio Drama Day is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the work that goes into crafting these immersive stories. For us, it’s a reminder of why we love what we do - bringing stories to life in a way that connects with listeners on a deeper level, it’s pure magic!
As we look forward to unveiling our new Dolby Atmos suite and continuing to push the boundaries of what audio can do, we’re excited to see where the next chapter in audio drama will take us. For us, the story is always just beginning.
